First, the checklist
The pilots of a Tunisian ATR 72 turboprop that ditched in the Mediterranean will each spend ten years in jail for praying when they should have been trying to land the aeroplane or prepare for a ditching.
Media reports say a Palermo court found that Captain Shafik Al Garbi and First Officer Ali Kebaier Lassoued, who survived the crash, had failed to follow necessary emergency procedures when they panicked and began praying out loud after both engines failed successively due to fuel starvation. 16 people died in the 2005 crash. The engine failures were caused by an incorrectly installed fuel gauge, and five other airline employees were also sentenced to between eight and nine years in jail.
