Sydney airport gets cross

Paul Phelan , 11 December 2009 – 1:41 pmMake a Comment

Sydney Airport has bounced the ball back to the Daily Telegraph, whose reporter John Rolfe blasted the airport today over parking fees charged to Customs staff working at the international terminal.

The Telegraph report said 600 customs officers were now forced to pay $2,000 a year for parking following their move to a building owned by Sydney Airports Corporation (SACL), which is 83 per cent owned by Macquarie Airports (MAp).

“Sydney Airport provides free parking for front-line border security staff working in the International Terminal,” says airport spokesman Michael Samaras. “Sydney Airport allows up to 973 free parking passes for the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service, Department of Immigration and the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service – up to 600 are issued to Customs.

“This is a longstanding arrangement and there has been no change. This information was handed to Mr John Rolfe of the Daily Telegraph at 4.30pm yesterday afternoon and Sydney Airport finds it inexplicable that it was omitted from his story in today’s newspaper.”
