Airbus A380 orders soar

Dubai based Emirates Airline has signed a staggering order for a further 32 A380s from Airbus, taking its total firm orders for the type to 90 aircraft. The order has a list price of US$ 11.5 billion. The agreement was signed in a ceremony on June 8 at the Berlin Air Show.

Bendigo pilots, Ken Evers & Tim Pryse, on a fund-raising round-the-world flight for Millions Against Malaria, passed the halfway mark when they landed their Gippsland Aeronautics GA8 Airvan at Accra in Ghana this week. Sponsored by Gippsland Aeronautics’ new co-owners Mahindra Aerospace, the flight aims to celebrate 100 years of Australian aviation and to raise money for Malaria awareness.

Airbus hands over its 30th A380

Airbus Industrie’s thirtieth A380 was delivered today to Emirates Airline, one of the launch customers of the big Airbus double-decker. This is the tenth A380 Emirates has received out of the Dubai carrier’s total firm order for 58 aircraft. This aircraft and Lufthansa’s recently delivered first A380 will be on display at the ILA Berlin Air Show which is taking place from June 8th to 13th.

Eurocopter is claiming a new record for the performance of one of its AS350 Squirrel helicopters, which rescued three Spanish mountain climbers from a 6,900m (22,638 ft) site on Nepal’s Mount Annapurna on April 29. The operation has underscored the performance capabilities of Eurocopter’s Ecureuil (Squirrel) helicopter in extreme conditions………

Wagga upgrades instrument approach

Airservices Australia, Wagga Wagga City Council and Regional Express have entered a joint agreement to purchase, install and operate an Instrument Landing System (ILS) at Wagga Airport with the assistance of a federal government grant announced today. Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Anthony Albanese, confirmed that almost $1.1million will be provided to Wagga City Council as part of the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program for the installation of the ILS.

QantasLink goes international

QantasLink today launched its planned schedule on the busy Cairns-Port Moresby route, with 12 return flights weekly to commence from 1 July 2010 (subject to regulatory approvals.) With cruising speeds close to jets at around 360 knots, the new 74-seat Q400 aircraft offering 1776 seats each week will now be competing directly on one of Air Niugini’s prime routes.

WA Police modernise their airborne capability

A $10 million multi-role Eurocopter Dauphin AS365 N3 helicopter sale will soon bring new airborne capabilities to the Western Australia Police. Due for delivery in September 2011, the AS365 N3 is the latest variant in Eurocopter’s Dauphin range. The four tonne, medium size, twin-engine helicopter has an unusually long range (for a helicopter) of 650km, can seat up to  and features advanced avionics that support the latest search & rescue and day/night surveillance capabilities under instrument flight rules (IFR).

Airbus delivers Lufthansa’s first Airbus A380

Lufthansa became the fifth airline to fly the Airbus A380, with the delivery this week of the first of the 15 aircraft it has ordered, and three more will join the fleet in 2010. The German flag carrier will deploy its new flagship aircraft on routes to Tokyo, Beijing and Johannesburg.

ATSB homes in on third party pilot training

The ATSB has released its final report on the “hard landing” accident to a Qantaslink Boeing 717 at Darwin on February 7, 2008. Although the landing resulted in a recorded vertical force of 3.6g and caused severe damage which resulted in the event being classified as an accident, no injuries were reported and the crew taxied to the terminal without further incident.
